Sub-Committees of the Commission

The Commission has constituted and/or announced its sub-committees to assist it in the discharge of its constitutional duties. The committees are:

 

i.     The Committee of the Whole House, comprising of the Chairman and the Members, with the Secretary of the Commission as its Secretary.

 

ii.    The House Committee, made up of the four (4) non-statutory members, with the most senior Lawyer as its Chairman, and the Secretary of the Commission as its Secretary.

 

iii.  The Judiciary Senior Staff Committee (JSSC)

This Committee is charged with responsibility of investigating, and advising the Commission on, disciplinary matters involving Senior Staff of the Judicial Service, including Magistrates.  It is headed by a Senior Judge of the High Court, with a Judge of the Customary Court of Appeal deputizing.  Other Members are the Chief Registrars of the High Court and Customary Court of Appeal, the Accountant of the Judicial Service Commission as well as the Chairman of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) Rivers State.  The Secretary of the JSC is a Member/Secretary of the Committee.

 

 

iv.   Performance Evaluation Committee (PEC)

Pursuant to the Public Notice No. 1 of 30th September, 2013 on the National Judicial Policy issued by the National Judicial Institute and the directives for compliance by the Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman of the National Judicial Council (NJC), the Commission has set up a Performance Evaluation Committee (PEC), which committee is charged with the responsibility of evaluating, and advising the Commission on the performance of the Judges of the Lower Courts, that is Magistrates and Customary Courts Judges, with a view to ensuring effective, efficient and timeous justice delivery at the Lower Courts.  The Committee is headed by a Judge of the High Court, who is being assisted by a Judge of the Customary Court of Appeal.  Other members of the Committee are the Deputy Chief Registrars (Litigation) of the High Court and Customary Court of Appeal, and a Legal Assistant to the Chief Judge of the State  as Member/Secretary.  The Committee has since commenced work.

 

v.    Judiciary Advisory Committee (JAC),

The JAC, advises the Commission on matters affecting Junior Staff.  It comprises of the Chief Registrar, High Court (as Chairman), the  Deputy Chief Registrars of the High Court and Customary Court of Appeal, the Director, Personnel of the High Court, and the Head of Administration of the JSC.  It also includes a Senior Administrative Staff of the High Court (who serves as the Secretary), and the Customary Court of Appeal.
